My Granddaddy And My Dad

 My Granddaddy And My Dad

My grandmother, on my daddy's side,  became pregnant soon after their marriage.  My grandfather died in the coal mines .  He was crushed by a huge piece of slate that fell on top of him.  My grandmother was still pregnant and my dad was born with no father.  My grandmother soon married again to a man name Joseph.  Joseph was the only father my dad ever knew and  he never once treated him different than any of his other children .  My granddaddy loved him just as much.  I know that because I know my granddaddy loved each one of us grandchildren.  My grandparents would have us all pile up in the old station wagon and  would take us swimming at the creek.

My grandfather was a very handsome man with a tall skinny build and he wore glasses. He was a very hardworking man that believed in taking care of his family.  When He came home from work he was tired,  so he would stretch his back out on the floor waiting for supper to get ready.   I can remember us kids  jumping on top of granddaddy giggling and He loved every minute of it.

My dad had become ill with polio when he was young,  so my dad always walked around with a limp because one leg was shorter than other, but my dad never seemed to stop working.  My dad liked to take apart things to see how they worked and then he would put them back together again.  He was a tool guy and He could fix any car.  His hands were always dirty looking even when they were clean  and I liked it because I knew my daddy was a hard worker and I was proud of him.  My dad always told us good morning in a very cheerful way and He loved to hear us girls just chatter away like little girls usually do.

One of my fondest memories with my dad was when we sat on the front porch swing and he would listen to me sing.  My daddy didn't go to church, but on an occasion, but he did go later on in life.  My daddy sat close beside me,  there as I sang the children's song.  "Come Into My Heart Lord Jesus".   along with the other songs I had learned in Sunday School.
