🫏 Melvin & Melvina: The Picnic Predicament

🫏 Melvin & Melvina: The Picnic Predicament

Theme: Gratitude even when plans go wrong

Narrator:
It was a perfect sunny day for a church picnic. Melvin and Melvina had packed everything — sandwiches, lemonade, and a blanket that smelled faintly of hay and hope.

Melvina:
“Hee‑haw means: Don’t forget the napkins!”

Melvin:
“Got ’em! I even brought extra mustard. I’m prepared for greatness.”

Narrator:
They trotted to the meadow, spread the blanket, and sat down.
Well… Melvin sat down a little too enthusiastically.

Melvina:
(gasping)
“Melvin! You sat on the sandwiches!”

Melvin:
(blinking)
“I thought that was the cushion!”

Melvina:
“Hee‑haw means: It was the lunch!”

Narrator:
Melvin lifted himself up slowly. The sandwiches were now… artistic.
One looked like modern art. Another resembled a pancake.

Melvin:
“Maybe we can call it ‘Pressed Blessings.’

Melvina:
(sighing, then smiling)
“Hee‑haw means: I’m praying for patience.”

Narrator:
They bowed their heads right there on the blanket.

Melvina:
“Lord, thank You for sunshine, for laughter, and for sandwiches that still taste good — even when they’re flat.”

Melvin:
“And thank You that Melvina didn’t sit on the lemonade.”

Narrator:
They laughed, shared their squished feast, and remembered that joy doesn’t depend on perfection — only on gratitude.

📖 Scripture Thought (KJV)

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

🫏 Melvin & Melvina: The Picnic Predicament — The Bee Attack (According to Melvin)

Theme: Gratitude even when plans go wrong

Narrator: Just when Melvin and Melvina had accepted their squished sandwiches as “Pressed Blessings,” a new sound drifted across the meadow…

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ—

Melvin: (freezing like a statue) “Melvina… don’t move. Don’t breathe. Don’t blink. The air is angry.”

Melvina: “It’s just a bee.”

Melvin: “JUST a bee? JUST?! That’s like saying ‘JUST a tornado’ or ‘JUST a stampede.’”

Narrator: The bee hovered closer. Melvin’s ears stood straight up like two terrified antennas.

Melvin: (whisper‑screaming) “It’s coming for me. It knows I’m sweet. I TOLD you I shouldn’t have worn the honey‑scented shampoo!”

Melvina: “You don’t wear shampoo.”

Melvin: “WELL MAYBE I SHOULD START!”

Narrator: The bee circled Melvin’s head. Melvin ducked, dodged, and performed a dramatic slow‑motion roll across the picnic blanket.

Melvin: “IT’S CHOOSING A TARGET! I AM THE TARGET!”

Melvina: “Hee‑haw means: Melvin, calm down.”

Melvin: “I am calm! This is my calm voice! AHHHHHH—”

Narrator: Melvina bowed her head, serene as a summer breeze.

Melvina: “Lord… please give Melvin peace… and please give this bee a flower. A big one. Far away.”

Narrator: The bee buzzed once more, circled Melvin’s twitching ear, and drifted off toward a patch of clover.

Melvin: (peeking one eye open) “Is it gone? Am I alive? Do I still have all my parts?”

Melvina: (smiling) “Hee‑haw means: Yes, Melvin. All your parts are present.”

Melvin: “Thank You, Lord… and thank You, Melvina… for praying before I ran screaming into the woods.”

Narrator: And so, with sandwiches squished and nerves rattled, they remembered that gratitude doesn’t depend on perfect picnics — only on trusting God through the buzzing moments.

🫏 Devotion: “Buzzing Lessons in Patience and Gratitude”

Paragraph 1
Sometimes life feels like a perfect picnic — sunshine, laughter, and everything neatly packed. Then, without warning, something buzzes into our peace. For Melvin, it was a bee; for us, it might be a worry, a disappointment, or a sudden change of plans. Yet even in those moments, God invites us to pause and remember that His presence doesn’t vanish when things go wrong.

Paragraph 2
Melvin’s panic reminds us how quickly fear can take over. We jump, we shout, we imagine the worst. But Melvina’s calm prayer shows the better way — turning fear into faith. When we pray first, we give God room to quiet our hearts and guide our reactions. Gratitude begins where panic ends.

Paragraph 3
The bee didn’t stay forever, and neither do our troubles. They buzz around for a while, testing our patience, but they eventually drift away. What remains is the lesson: God’s peace is stronger than any buzzing fear. He teaches us to laugh, to breathe, and to trust Him even when the picnic doesn’t go as planned.

Paragraph 4
Melvina’s prayer under the tree is a picture of grace. She didn’t scold Melvin; she prayed for him. That’s love in action — gentle, steady, and thankful. When we respond to life’s interruptions with prayer instead of frustration, we become instruments of peace. Gratitude turns every mishap into a moment of worship.

Paragraph 5
So, whether your picnic is perfect or your sandwiches are squished, remember this truth: God is near. He smiles at our laughter, comforts our fears, and teaches us to give thanks in all things. Even the buzzing moments can become blessings when we trust Him completely.

🗣️ Talk

Sometimes life feels like Melvin’s picnic — we sit right on the sandwiches. We make a mess, we laugh, we sigh, and we realize we still need grace. Church days, family days, farm days — they all have their “What’s going on?” moments. But God doesn’t leave us in the confusion; He teaches us through it. He reminds us that peace doesn’t come from perfect plans, but from His presence. When we talk to Him honestly, He listens tenderly. And when we pray, He restores calm to our hearts.

🙏 Prayer

Lord, Thank You for loving us even when life feels mixed‑up and messy. When confusion swirls around us, remind us that You are not the author of it — You are the giver of peace. Help our pastor, our church, and each of us to walk in patience and understanding. Teach us to laugh kindly, forgive quickly, and pray continually. Bring order to our hearts and unity to our fellowship. And when we whisper, “What’s going on?” Let Your Spirit answer, “I am here.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.

🙏 Prayer

“Dear Lord,
Thank You for being with me in every buzzing moment.
When fear rises, help me to pray instead of panic.
Teach me to find joy in small things and patience in interruptions.
Let gratitude fill my heart, even when plans go wrong.
May Your peace rest upon me today and always.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

God Forms The Clay

God Forms The Clay

 When the sunrises, When the sunsets;
When the wind blows or stillness met.
When the rain sounds, When the sun  beams joy;
Let our hearts and minds not forget.

He knows every heartache,  He sees each tear.
He knows each word, our lips declare.
He  knows our failure, and He knows our shame;
He knows when we've cried out His name.

When the clouds glide by in an open sky;
When a broken heart cries out why - oh why?
When a sounding stream fills the forest green;
 Or it is a loved ones time to die;

He gives comfort through a pleasant song;
Through prayer that lasts all day long;
Our hope in God's  Word, which will not change.
These are the things that keep us strong.

When confusion keeps us in dismay;
We cry out Oh God, please lead our way.
When wrong has seemed to overshadow us.
We must remember God forms the clay.

When the sunrises, When the sunsets;
When the wind blows or stillness met.
When the rain sounds, When the sun  beams joy;
Let our hearts and minds not forget.

He knows every heartache,  He sees each tear.
He knows each word, our lips declare.
He  knows our failure, and He knows our shame.
He knows when we've cried out His name.

He takes the clay within His loving hand.
Although we do not understand;
He molds together joy and the sorrow;

To conform us to His perfect plan.

Quilted In Love

Quilted In Love

God- see's the beginning:
God see's the final end.
Life is stitched - in His love;
And sings within the wind.

Like a- loving mother;
Crochets or quilts a gift.
God is quilting in His love;
With golden threads adrift.

When troubles and great trials;
Seem to crash- all around.
Not a sin-gle voice of cheer;
In this world - can be found.

We find ourselves asking;
Is our Lord in control?
Has He left me here alone?
Does He care for my soul?

In this world of trouble;
Confusing, though it be.
God's golden threads of hope;
Gives hope, when we can't see.

Stitching here , mending there;
With precision, designed.
He is busy stitching;
A quilt that's golden lined.

Like a quilt upon His knee;
He holds each child with care.
He knows all our weaknesses'
He knows when there's despair.

He knows all of our needs;
and our choices and plans.
He knows the pain that we feel;
Like the prints in His hands.

Each quilt is valuable;
A golden lined life displayed.
A quilt designed, unique;
With worth that can't be weighed.

Will you yield to His quilting?
Will you desire His will?
As He's quilting His purpose;
In humility kneel?

If a quilt lays down yielded;
God's golden threads will gleam.
And to the world around it;
Jesus will clearly be seen.

Fixing Problems

Fixing Problems

By: Susan Y Nikitenko
January 6th, 2012

After church on Thursday night our truck would not start.   My husband thought it was the battery so our Son in law pulled out the jumper cables to charge the battery.  The effort was of no avail.  They then slugged through a snowdrift to get to the store across the street.  They bought tools to remove it.  Even though they worked hard they still could not remove it. They were using the wrong tools.

My daughter and I waited in the car, it was very cold outside.  Our Son in law then drove us to K-mart to buy new tools and a new battery .  Then we went back to the church.  Where they worked a long time, but they still couldn't fix the problem.

It takes us about 25 minutes to drive home from our church.  We went home to get more tools, tools they thought would work.  My daughter and I stayed home.  They went back and worked and did not get back until midnight.  The problem still was not fixed.

They weren't using the right tools and they were working on the wrong problem.  The problem they were working on didn't exist.   The truck didn't need a new battery.  It needs a new starter.

Sometimes people go to fixing something and they're using the wrong tools.

Anger isn't the right tool to use when you're trying to fix a problem in a relationship for example.

Gossip isn't the right tool to use when you're praying for someone in a group setting.

Tricking isn't the right tool because it creates mistrust and confusion.  Confusion is of the devil.

We need to be sure we are using the right tools- you know, the "righteous tools". When dealing with the problems of life we need to use tools like prayer and hiding Gods Word in our heart, tools like love and a soft answer, tools like wisdom and encouragement, tools like faith and consideration. These are the right tools.
Sometimes we think we're fixing a problem and it's just made things worse.  We end up breaking something,
that would have never been broken.

Sometimes we think we have everything figured out, but all along we were trying to fix the wrong thing.
What we were working on never needed fixing at all.

Sometimes we just need a new start.  Just like our truck, it needs a new starter.

When we go to fixing problems, we need to know for sure the problem is real.

When we go to fixing problems, we need to know it's the right problem.

When we go to fixing problems, we need to be using the right tools.

When we go to fixing problems we better know God wants us to do the fixing.

Hopefully we have the right person repairing our truck, or we may have bigger problems.

The same way in life.

Jesus is the best  fixer upper I know.
Sometimes the best tool, is leaving things in God's hands.
  His grace goes a long way.

What is Right and What is Wrong? - By: Susan Y Nikitenko

What is Right and What is Wrong?

By: Susan Y Nikitenko
2010

What is right and what is wrong?
That is the question I ask.
Every day, all day long.

Confusion, all around us;
Troublesome choices to make.
Asking direction from God;
Which direction to take.

Forming the right opinions,
Making the right choice, you see,
Pleasing my Lord and Savior;
That is important to me.

For the first time I'm questioning;
For the first time I feel blind.
I wonder how many others;
Have trouble finding that fine line.

At times our faith is tested.
At times our faith appears small.
At times were left a wond'ring;
Do we really know much at all?

Should we be up front and honest;
Or leave one believing a lie.
Cause we're afraid to offend one;
We back off and choose to be shy?

What is right and what is wrong?
That is the question I ask.
Every day, all day long.

If my hair was just a mess;
Or my shirt on inside out.
I'd hope someone would tell me;
Even if it made me pout.

Then I'd take the time to fix it;
I'd make the wrong, then right.
Cause sometimes we have a blind side;
And are blinded to our blight.

If my child was in a sin trap,
Or lay sickly, near to death.
I'd hope someone would tell me;
Instead of leaving me to guess.

Tell the truth in love because;
The truth has power to free.
Tell the truth in love because;
It enables one to see.

What is right and what is wrong?
That is the question I ask.
Every day, all day long.

If I had the remedy
That cured lepers from their spots
But just slumbered back silently
In my own life and own thoughts

Would that be called merciful?
Would that be considered kind?
Leaving that poor sickly one
In their sickness, there behind?

If I knew of a danger
That would hurt a passer by
Would I keep my lips sealed
Even though I knew they'd die?

The Bible teaches there's a hell to fear
Will our lips warn ev'ry man?
The Bible warns us God will judge
Will we follow His command?

What is right and what is wrong?
That is the question I ask.
Every day, all day long.
