Smoking Cigarettes June 25th, 2013

Smoking Cigarettes
Both of my parents were smokers and so were the majority of my family members.  I started smoking when I was a tween along with many other older teenagers.   I thought it was a very cool grownup thing to do.   I smoked until I was 27 years old.

When my baby was born I wouldn’t smoke in our house because I didn’t want my baby to be affected by breathing in cigarette smoke.  I went faithfully to church and even taught Sunday School as a smoker.  I smoked teaching only for about 6 months after I started teaching.   I was ashamed of smoking.  I tried hiding the fact that I smoked but it is something that is very hard to hide.  I didn’t lie about it I just didn’t tell anyone.
I remember praying numerous times to the Lord to help me stop, but still, I could not quit.  One day when my child became older she walked into the garage where I was smoking.  I knew that if I didn’t quit it would affect my child’s whole life.  That morning I prayed to the Lord. “ Lord, help me stop smoking because if you don’t Lord, I will smoke until the day I die.”   Like a miracle,  I never smoked again even to this day.  The one thing that helped me when I wanted a cigarette was the breathing exercises I learned from the birthing classes I attended before my daughter was born.   No one told me to do the breathing exercises to relieve the desire to smoke, I just did it and it helped.  I’ve shared with other people about this breathing exercise idea for helping smokers stop smoking for many years.   I know God delivered me from smoking but He also put in my heart to breathe if I felt an erg to smoke again.

A week after I was delivered from smoking I received a free carton of cigarettes in my mailbox.  I immediately ran water over the carton and threw it into the trashcan. I believed it was a temptation from satan.   That was over twenty years ago.

I thank God every day that I do not smoke because number one it stinks, number two it destroys belongings, and number three it makes people sick.  I can’t hardly tolerate being around smoking because it makes both me and my daughter feel sick and especially my daughter who sometimes has asthma attacks.
